It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bryan Ray at his home in West Compton on 4 September.
He was hugely respected by all those who had the good fortune to know him. In 1948, at the tender age of 19, he joined the Somaliland Scouts as a young subaltern and served with them for 2 years in and around the Ogaden. He left Somaliland in 1950 and then served with the Queens Regiment and its predecessors in many places around the world.
In 1972 he was seconded to the Sultan's Armed Forces and took command of the Northern Frontier Regiment. He served with distinction in Dhofar until handing over command in 1974.
His experiences in both Somaliland and Oman are described in fascinating detail in his book, Dangerous Frontiers, mainly written shortly after his return to the UK in 1974.
Bryan returned to Oman in 1982 and served for a further 6 years in ORD/ISS mainly in Dhofar.
A more detailed obituary will be published in due course and will of course be included in next year's issue of the Journal. Details of funeral and/or memorial service arrangements will be published on this page of the website once known.
Our thoughts are with Harriet at this difficult time.
