Commander Alistair Beaton

Updated: May 29

We regret to report the death on 21st May of Alistair Beaton after a short illness. Alistair served in SON/RNO from 1980 to 1992 and was a very popular and well loved member of the wardroom.

Alistair joined SON as it then was in 1980 in Muscat where he became CO of the Exocet armed FPB, SNV AL MANSUR. He then became XO of the landing ship SNV AL MUNASSIR and subsequently assumed command before moving to NHQ in MAM as SO2 Personnel. By this time Alistair had met, courted and married Annette, a recently arrived PDO teacher. After three years in NHQ promotion to Muqaddam took Alistair to the Mussandam where he assumed command of RMB (Goat Island) and became the Peninsula Naval Area Commander.

On leaving Oman in 1992 the growing family returned to Scotland and Alistair became bursar of the Morrison Academy in Crieff. As a former bagpipe player and active folk musician in Oman he was closely involved in the school pipe band and he arranged and led the band’s visit to Oman in 2016. Whilst there they participated in educational and cultural events and performed at various venues including the American British Academy and PDO.

The funeral will be held at 11:30 on Thursday 30th May at Perth Crematorium, 165 Crieff Road, Perth, PH1 2PE. No further details are currently available.

Our thoughts are with Annette, Gregor and Sarah and with the rest of the extended family.
