Phillip Robinson died on 3 December 2024 aged 84.
He was a Royal Engineer officer who specialised in Survey and map production and he was also an elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
Officers who go into the Survey Branch of the Sappers tend to be in some remote part of the world with a theodolite – or in some mysterious and invisible intelligence domain in close collaboration with people like NASA. Phillip matched these Survey Branch specialist traits with his keen interest and enthusiasm in investigating WW1 military tunnels.
He was seconded to the Sultan’s Armed Forces Engineers from 1989 until 1994 - and then completed one further year on contract, before retiring back to UK in 1995. His final posting in Oman was as second-in-command of the Omani National Survey Authority who have the responsibility for producing all maps of Oman.
Phillip always had a great interest in excavating, exploring and reopening 1st World War trenches and tunnels and - after being officially involved in the making safe of an old abandoned mine charge left over from WW1 on the Vimy Ridge Memorial Site in France in 1988 – he subsequently formed and became the founding chairman of the Durand Group. [Note that this interesting website is well worth a visit.] This is an association of individuals who have voluntarily undertaken to work together to research and investigate military subterranean features.
Phillip was the husband of Mary and father to Alexander and Jeremy.
